Moments Matter

Have you ever noticed that most people tend to be happy in coffee shops?

Sure, there’s an occasional one off where a customer may be rude or unkind to a barista for providing the wrong order, but overwhelmingly, most people who enter into a coffee shop, enter in with a vibrancy.

I spend a lot of time in coffee shops as they serve as a good neutral meeting ground and ‘co-working space’ of sorts for me in my business.

So, I get to see a lot of these interactions firsthand.

Customers have a pep in their step. A smile on their face. And an apparent joy in their voice.

Which has led me to wondering why?

What is it about the coffee shop that allows people to show up as the best of themselves?

Is it the anticipation of caffeine? Is it the interruption from “reality?” Is it the music? The ambiance?

I believe it’s a moment of connection and presence.

We’re all relatively “wired” the same way. We want to feel good and be appreciated.

And the coffee shop provides that for most.

You’re usually greeted by a warm hello, a smile, and an intangible energy. You start your day with a pleasant connection.

A moment of peace. A moment of joy.

And a moment of ‘presence’ before the chaos of the day may begin.

Which sends an evident reminder to me that we must duplicate more moments of connection, more often.

We must be intentional about putting ourselves in environments where we innately feel good.

In short, we must recognize that moments matter. And how we spend each moment, impacts how we show up in the next moments.
